Verbs in Czech

Here are some of the most useful verbs in Czech and how to use them in sentences.


hovořit - to speak

This verb is used to indicate communication by speaking.

Conjugation

The present tense conjugation of "hovořit" is:

  • já hovořím
  • ty hovoříš
  • on/ona/ono hovoří
  • my hovoříme
  • vy hovoříte
  • oni/ony/ona hovoří

Examples

  • Hovoříš anglicky? (Do you speak English?)
  • On umí hovořit plynule německy. (He can speak German fluently.)

mít - to have

This verb is used to indicate possession.

Conjugation

The present tense conjugation of "mít" is:

  • já mám
  • ty máš
  • on/ona/ono má
  • my máme
  • vy máte
  • oni/ony/ona mají

Examples

  • Mám auto. (I have a car.)
  • Ty máš krásný dům. (You have a beautiful house.)

dělat - to do/make

This verb is used to indicate an action.

Conjugation

The present tense conjugation of "dělat" is:

  • já dělám
  • ty děláš
  • on/ona/ono dělá
  • my děláme
  • vy děláte
  • oni/ony/ona dělají

Examples

  • Co děláš? (What are you doing?)
  • Ráda dělám koláče. (I like making cakes.)

jet - to go/drive

This verb is used to indicate movement by vehicle.

Conjugation

The present tense conjugation of "jet" is:

  • já jedu
  • ty jedes
  • on/ona/ono jede
  • my jedeme
  • vy jedete
  • oni/ony/ona jedou

Examples

  • Jedeme na dovolenou. (We're going on vacation.)
  • Oni jezdí každý den do práce. (They drive to work every day.)

chtít - to want

This verb is used to indicate desire or intention.

Conjugation

The present tense conjugation of "chtít" is:

  • já chci
  • ty chceš
  • on/ona/ono chce
  • my chceme
  • vy chcete
  • oni/ony/ona chtějí

Examples

  • Chci jít do kina. (I want to go to the cinema.)
  • Ona chce koupit nový telefon. (She wants to buy a new phone.)

potřebovat - to need

This verb is used to indicate necessity.

Conjugation

The present tense conjugation of "potřebovat" is:

  • já potřebuju
  • ty potřebuješ
  • on/ona/ono potřebuje
  • my potřebujeme
  • vy potřebujete
  • oni/ony/ona potřebují

Examples

Potřebuju nové boty. (I need new shoes.) Ty potřebuješ pomoct s těmi těžkými krabicemi. (You need help with those heavy boxes.)
