Marathi Grammar → Advanced Marathi grammar → Compound words

As a Marathi language teacher with over 20 years of experience, I am excited to introduce you to the fascinating world of compound words in Marathi. Compound words are words that are formed by combining two or more words. They are widely used in Marathi and are an essential part of the language. In this lesson, you will learn about the different types of compound words in Marathi and how to use them in sentences.

What are Compound Words?

Compound words are created by joining two or more words together to form a new word. In Marathi, compound words are formed by combining two or more nouns, adjectives, adverbs, or verbs. When two words are combined, they create a new word with a different meaning. Some examples of compound words in Marathi include "चिकित्साविद्रोही" (chikit-sa-vidrohi), which means "anti-doctor."

Compound words can be further classified into two categories:

Tatpurush Samas (तत्पुरुष समास)

Tatpurush samas is a type of compound word in which a noun is used to describe another noun. The noun that describes the other noun is placed first, followed by the noun that is being described. In this type of compound word, the second word is always in the oblique case (कर्तृविभक्ति).

For example:

Marathi Pronunciation English
धडक्याणे लहान मुळे dhadkyane lahan mule Heartbeat of a child
शरीराच्या दोन पायांवरील नाखें sharirachya don payanvaril nakhen Nails on two feet of the body

Karmadhari Samas (कर्मधारी समास)

Karmadhari samas is a type of compound word in which a verb is used to describe a noun. In this type of compound word, the first word is in the non-oblique case, and the second word is always in the oblique case.

For example:

Marathi Pronunciation English
पूर्णरूपे वस्तू दुऱ्या काढल्याने puranrupe vastu durya kadalyane Object taken away by stealing entirely
शीर्षमध्ये काम करण्यासाठी shirshmadhye kam karnyasathi To work at the top position

How to use Compound Words in Sentences

Using compound words in sentences is easy once you understand their formation. Here are some examples:

Example: Tatpurush Samas

Marathi: तांबुळ रस्सा

Pronunciation: taambul rassa

Translation: Betel juice

Example sentence: तांबुळ रस्सा आज पाहिजे (Taambul rassa aaj pahije) - I need betel juice today.

Example: Karmadhari Samas
