Dari Grammar - Adjectives

Hi Dari learners! 😊
In today's lesson, we will be discussing adjectives in the Dari language. Adjectives are words that describe or modify nouns and pronouns. They can be used to give more information about a person, place, thing, or idea. In this lesson, we will look at how to use adjectives in Dari, as well as some common examples.

Types of Adjectives

Adjectives can be divided into two main categories: descriptive adjectives and possessive adjectives.

Descriptive Adjectives

Descriptive adjectives are used to describe the qualities of a noun or pronoun. Examples of descriptive adjectives include: big, small, tall, short, happy, sad, etc.

Possessive Adjectives

Possessive adjectives are used to show ownership or possession. Examples of possessive adjectives include: my, your, his, her, its, our, their, etc.

Adjective Placement

In Dari, adjectives usually come after the noun or pronoun they are describing. For example:

  • The big house (خانه بزرگ)
  • My happy dog (سگ من خوشحال)

However, there are some exceptions to this rule. For example, when using the verb "to be", the adjective comes before the noun or pronoun. For example:

  • The house is big (خانه بزرگ است)
  • My dog is happy (سگ من خوشحال است)

Adjective Agreement

In Dari, adjectives must agree with the noun or pronoun they are describing in terms of gender and number. For example:

  • The big house (خانه بزرگ)
  • The big houses (خانه‌های بزرگ)
  • The big girl (دختر بزرگ)
  • The big girls (دخترهای بزرگ)

Common Adjectives

Here are some common adjectives in Dari:

  • Big (بزرگ)
  • Small (کوچک)
  • Tall (بلند)
  • Short (کوتاه)
  • Happy (خوشحال)
  • Sad (غمگین)
