Animals in Nigeria

Mammals

A large number of different mammals are found in Nigeria, with a wide variety of habitats. These include lions, leopards, mongooses, hyenas, side-banded jackals, African elephants, African buffaloes, African manatees, rhinos, antelopes, waterbucks, giraffes, warthogs, warthogs, hippos, pangolins, aardvarks, western hyraxes, baboons, monkeys, baboons, western gorillas, chimpanzees, bats, shrews, mice, rats, squirrels and gerbils.

Birds

Many species of birds have been recorded in Nigeria. Each geographical area has its typical bird species, with a few found in both forest and savannah. Around Oba Dam, east of Ibadan, various waterfowl can be seen, including several species of herons and egrets, African pygmy goose, crested jacana, black-winged stilt, Egyptian plover and crake. In the adjacent rainforest, specialties include the square-tailed drongo and shiny-backed drongo, African oriole and black-headed oriole, painted snipe, several species of doves, Klaas's and Diederik's cuckoos, as well as kingfishers, bee-eaters, rollers and shrikes.
