Lingala Grammar - Nouns

Hi Lingala learners! 😊
In today's lesson, we will be discussing nouns in the Lingala language. Nouns are an important part of any language, and understanding how to use them correctly is essential for speaking and writing Lingala. We will cover the basics of nouns, including their gender, number, and case. We will also look at some examples of how to use nouns in sentences.

Gender

Nouns in Lingala have two genders: masculine and feminine. The gender of a noun can usually be determined by its ending. Masculine nouns typically end in -a or -o, while feminine nouns typically end in -e or -i. For example, the word for "book" is liboso (masculine) and the word for "girl" is mwasi (feminine).

Number

Nouns in Lingala can be singular or plural. To make a noun plural, add the suffix -o to the end of the word. For example, the word for "book" is liboso (singular) and the word for "books" is libosoo (plural).

Case

Nouns in Lingala can take different cases depending on their function in a sentence. The most common cases are the nominative, accusative, and dative.

Nominative

The nominative case is used when the noun is the subject of the sentence. For example, in the sentence "The girl is reading a book," the noun "girl" is in the nominative case.

Accusative

The accusative case is used when the noun is the direct object of the sentence. For example, in the sentence "The girl is reading a book," the noun "book" is in the accusative case.

Dative

The dative case is used when the noun is the indirect object of the sentence. For example, in the sentence "The girl is giving a book to her friend," the noun "friend" is in the dative case.

Examples

Here are some examples of how to use nouns in sentences:

  • Mwana oyo azali koloba liboso. (The boy is buying a book.)
  • Mwasi ee azali kozwa libosoo. (The girl is reading books.)
  • Mwana oyo azali kokoma liboso mwasi ee. (The boy is giving a book to the girl.)
