Latin Grammar - How to Use "Be"

The verb "be" is one of the most important verbs in Latin. It is used to express existence, identity, and location. The verb "be" is conjugated differently depending on the subject. Here are the conjugations for the verb "be":

Person Singular Plural
I sum sumus
You es estis
He/She/It est sunt

Let's look at some examples of how the verb "be" is used in Latin.

  • Person 1: Sum Romae. (I am in Rome.)
  • Person 2: Estne Marcus Romae? (Is Marcus in Rome?)
  • Person 1: Est. (Yes.)

The verb "be" can also be used to express identity.

  • Person 1: Quis es? (Who are you?)
  • Person 2: Sum Marcus. (I am Marcus.)

The verb "be" can also be used to express possession.

  • Person 1: Cuius est haec villa? (Whose house is this?)
  • Person 2: Mea est. (It is mine.)

The verb "be" can also be used to express location.

  • Person 1: Ubi est Marcus? (Where is Marcus?)
  • Person 2: Romae est. (He is in Rome.)
