Twi Grammar - Plurals

Learning the grammar of a language is essential to mastering it. In this lesson, we will focus on plurals in Twi. Plurals are used to indicate more than one of something. Knowing how to form plurals correctly is an important part of speaking Twi fluently.

Plural Formation

In Twi, there are two ways to form plurals: by adding a suffix or by reduplication.

Suffix

The most common way to form plurals in Twi is by adding a suffix. The suffix used depends on the noun's gender. For masculine nouns, the suffix is -mɔ. For feminine nouns, the suffix is -nɔ.

For example:

  • adwene (word) → adwenemɔ (words)
  • kɔtɔ (cat) → kɔtɔnɔ (cats)

Reduplication

The other way to form plurals in Twi is by reduplication. This means repeating the noun twice. This method is used for both masculine and feminine nouns.

For example:

  • adwene (word) → adwene adwene (words)
  • kɔtɔ (cat) → kɔtɔ kɔtɔ (cats)

Plural Agreement

When using plurals in Twi, it is important to make sure that the verb agrees with the noun. This means that the verb must also be in the plural form.

For example:

  • Adwenemɔ bɛyɛ nhoma. (The words are a sentence.)
  • Kɔtɔnɔ bɛyɛ nhoma. (The cats are a sentence.)
