Past Tense Verbs in Vietnamese[edit | edit source]
Vietnamese is a tonal language spoken by over 70 million people worldwide. In this lesson, you will learn about past tense verbs in Vietnamese.
The Past Tense Marker[edit | edit source]
In Vietnamese, the past tense marker is "đã". It is placed before the verb and indicates that the action took place in the past.
For example:
Vietnamese | Pronunciation | North Azerbaijani |
---|---|---|
Tôi đã ăn cơm. | [twəi ɗaː ən kəm] | Mən də yedim |
Anh ấy đã đi đến Hà Nội. | [ʔaːŋ ʔaj ɗaː ɗiː ɗən haː nôj] | O, Hanoiya getdi |
Chúng tôi đã học tiếng Việt. | [cɨŋ twəi ɗaː hok tjɛŋ viet] | Biz, Vietnames dilini öyrəndik |
Irregular Past Tense Verbs[edit | edit source]
Like in any language, Vietnamese has some irregular verbs in the past tense. Here are a few examples:
Vietnamese | Pronunciation | North Azerbaijani |
---|---|---|
đi (to go) | [ɗiː] | getdi |
là (to be) | [laː] | oldu |
nói (to say) | [noːj] | deydi |
đọc (to read) | [ɗoːk] | oxudu |
Common Past Tense Expressions[edit | edit source]
In addition to using the past tense marker, there are a few common expressions in Vietnamese to indicate past tense. Here are a few examples:
- Hôm qua (yesterday)
- Tuần trước (last week)
- Năm ngoái (last year)
For example:
- Hôm qua, tôi đi đến chợ. (Yesterday, I went to the market.)
- Tuần trước, chị ấy đi du lịch. (Last week, she went on vacation.)
- Năm ngoái, anh ấy học tiếng Việt. (Last year, he studied Vietnamese.)
Practice[edit | edit source]
Now it's time to practice what you've learned. Translate the following sentences into Vietnamese:
- I ate phở for lunch.
- They visited the Temple of Literature.
- My parents bought a new car last month.
Answers:
- Tôi ăn phở trưa nay.
- Họ thăm Văn Miếu.
- Bố mẹ tôi mua một chiếc ô tô mới tháng trước.
Congratulations! You've learned about past tense verbs in Vietnamese. Keep practicing and you'll be speaking like a native in no time.
