Here are some commonly used Marathi words for basic food items, with their English translations.

Ordering at a Restaurant

Now that you have learned some Marathi food and drink vocabulary, let's talk about how to order at a restaurant.

When you enter the restaurant, the waiter will probably say something like नमस्कार (namaskaar) which means "hello" in Marathi. You can reply by saying नमस्कार (namaskaar) or हाय (haay) which is a more informal way of saying "hi" in Marathi.

To order, you can say बाहेर आहे का मेनू? (baaher ahe ka menu?) which means "Do you have a menu?". Once you have the menu, you can ask खाण्याचा आणि पोटाचा मजा करा (khaanyacha aaṇi potaacha majaa kara) which means "Enjoy your food and your meal".

When you are ready to order, you can say मला ... घ्या (malaa ... ghyaa) which means "I want ...". For example, if you want to order rice, you can say मला भात घ्या (malaa bhaat ghyaa). If you want to order water, you can say मला पाणी घ्या (malaa paanee ghyaa).

It is also common to say काही फरक पडत नाही (kaahee pharak padat naahee) which means "It doesn't matter", when the waiter asks for your preference.
