Czech Vocabulary - Clothes

Hi Czech learners! 😊

In this lesson, we will focus on expanding our Czech vocabulary related to clothes. Whether you're going shopping for new threads or just need some help describing your outfit to someone, having these words in your back pocket will be extremely helpful.

Don't forget that the best way to learn a language is to practice speaking with native speakers. You can find them on Polyglot Club and ask them any questions about Czech.

Let's get started! 😎

Basic Clothing

Let's start with some basic clothing items:

Czech Pronunciation English
tričko /trɪtʃkɔ/ T-shirt
rifle /rɪflɛ/ Jeans
košile /kɔʃɪlɛ/ Shirt
nohavice /nohavɪtsɛ/ Pants
šaty /ʃatɪ/ Dress
sukne /sʊknɛ/ Skirt

Now let's practice using some of these in context:

  • Person 1: Mám na sobě tričko. (I am wearing a T-shirt.)
  • Person 2: A já rifle. (And I'm wearing jeans.)
  • Person 1: Fajn vypadáš! (You look great!)

Shoes and Accessories

Now let's move on to some shoes and accessories:

Czech Pronunciation English
boty /bɔtɪ/ Shoes
tenisky /tɛnɪskɪ/ Sneakers
kšiltovka /kʃɪltɔfka/ Baseball cap
šperky /ʃpɛrkɪ/ Jewelry
hodinky /hɔdɪnkɪ/ Watch
kabelka /kabɛlka/ Purse

Here's a dialogue where we use some of these:

  • Person 1: Mám moje nové tenisky. (I have my new sneakers.)
  • Person 2: A já mám svou oblíbenou kšiltovku. (And I have my favorite baseball cap.)
  • Person 1: Ty šperky jsou velmi hezké. (Those jewelry pieces are very nice.)
  • Person 2: Diky, to jsou moje oblíbené hodinky. (Thanks, those are my favorite watch.)

Outerwear

Finally, let's look at some outerwear:

Czech Pronunciation English
kabát /kabaːt/ Coat
bunda /bunda/ Jacket
šála /ʃaːla/ Scarf
rukavice /rukavɪtsɛ/ Gloves
čepice /tʃɛpɪtʃɛ/ Hat

Now let's tie it all together in a conversation:

  • Person 1: Dnes venku hustě sněží. (It's heavily snowing outside today.)
  • Person 2: Dobře, vezmu si můj kabát. Potřebuju taky rukavice a čepici. (Okay, I'll wear my coat. I also need gloves and a hat.)
  • Person 1: Určitě šálu taky, aby ti nebyla zima. (Definitely wear a scarf, too, so you're not cold.)
  • Person 2: Díky za radu. (Thanks for the advice.)

Congratulations, you just expanded your Czech vocabulary related to clothes! Don't forget to practice speaking with native speakers on Polyglot Club.
