敢(敢) găn dare; be bold in Mandarin Chinese
Definition
Radical is 攴 pū “tap” or “strike,” which on the right side of a character is written 攵. This character is itself a phonetic, e.g., in the character 橄 as it is used in the word 橄榄 (橄欖) gănlăn “olive.”
Examples
- 敢 (敢) găn dare [V/AV]
- 不敢当 (不敢當) bù găn dāng “don’t dare accept” [IE]
Note
Note that the difference between the official simplified form and the official traditional form of this character does not show up in all fonts; in some fonts, they both look the same.
