Croatian Grammar - Future Tense

Hi Croatian learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will be learning about the future tense in Croatian. We will look at how to form the future tense, as well as some examples of how it is used. By the end of this lesson, you will have a better understanding of how to use the future tense in Croatian.

Forming the Future Tense

The future tense in Croatian is formed by adding the appropriate ending to the infinitive form of the verb. The endings are as follows:

  • -ću for the first person singular (I)
  • -ćeš for the second person singular (you)
  • -će for the third person singular (he/she/it)
  • -ćemo for the first person plural (we)
  • -ćete for the second person plural (you)
  • -će for the third person plural (they)

For example, the verb "biti" (to be) has the following forms in the future tense:

Person Singular Plural
First bit ću bit ćemo
Second bit ćeš bit ćete
Third bit će bit će

Examples

Here are some examples of how the future tense is used in Croatian:

Croatian Pronunciation English Translation
Ja ću ići yah chu eechi I will go
Ti ćeš doći tee cheesh doch-chi You will come
On će doći ohn che doch-chi He/She/It will come
Mi ćemo doći mee cheh-moh doch-chi We will come
Vi ćete doći vee cheh-teh doch-chi You will come
Oni će doći oh-nee che doch-chi They will come
