Hi Polyglots!😀

This is a list of Anki shared decks for language learning that are most helpful.

Anki is an open-source flashcard software using spaced repetition, a technique from cognitive science for fast and long-lasting memorization. "Anki" is the Japanese word for "memorization".

Once you have installed Anki, you can create your own decks and if you wish, you can publish them as shared decks. By clicking on the button “get shared”, you can go to this Anki page to see and download shared decks made by other people.

➡ Deck selection criteria and tips

➡ Decks with at least one of these traits can be listed:

  • Complete, including pronunciation, grammatical gender, irregular forms, etc.
  • Brief, only keeping the essential information

➡ Decks specialised in these fields can be listed without being considered as redundant:

  • On a specific grammatical topic like irregular forms
  • On a language examination
  • For a language course

➡ Decks listed must possess these traits:

  • Few mistakes
  • Sufficient in quantity (500 or more for general vocabulary)
  • Not contained by any other deck or a series of decks, except when it's contained by a deck or series of decks with significantly larger quantity

The last trait is so explained:

The most important vocabulary are the most basic ones, then the intermediate ones. Basic ones can be practised well mainly through reading instead of flashcards. For this reason, a basic deck is unnecessary, and it is recommended to have a deck of intermediate vocabulary and a deck of advanced vocabulary (over 15000) if it exists. As a result, the intermediate ones are twice practised. This also helps to spot it when one of the decks has a mistake on a word.

Many decks show the foreign word on the front side and the meaning on the back. In this case, you can edit the card layout to reverse them.

Some decks have audio files. They can be used to train listening skill. You may need to modify the card layouts to practise properly.

If you want to delete all media of a deck, you can delete the fields of media, so they become unused media. Then go to “Tools” -> “Check media” to delete them.

Some decks have double cards for each note: front to back and back to front. If you want to save time on this, you can go to the card browser, open preview and see which card type has foreign words on the front side, then use “search” to select and disable them.

Sometimes the comment will tell you about the deck's quality. The commenters can make mistakes as well, such as not knowing the idiom and calling the translation wrong.

Keep in mind that the list is dynamic. It is common that when you have almost finished learning a deck, a new better one is available.

If you think a deck or a series of decks are better than a currently listed one, feel free to leave a comment.
