Dark and Light[edit | edit source]
Sometimes, you need words to describe something as either dark or light. In Hijazi Arabic, it works by adding the word (تو or tō) to the color. Here are some examples:
- أسود / أسود تو (aswad/aswad tō) black/dark black
- أحمر / أحمر تو (ahmar/ahmar tō) red/dark red
- أخضر / أخضر تو (akhḍar/akhḍar tō) green/dark green
- أزرق / أزرق تو (azraq/azraq tō) blue/dark blue
- بني / بني تو (buni/buni tō) brown/dark brown
The light variations of these colors use the word (فاتح or fātiḥ), instead of (تو or tō):
- أسود فاتح (aswad fātiḥ) light black
- أحمر فاتح (ahmar fātiḥ) pink
- أخضر فاتح (akhḍar fātiḥ) light green
- أصفر فاتح (asfar fātiḥ) light yellow
- أزرق فاتح (azraq fātiḥ) light blue
Examples[edit | edit source]
- Person 1: داخل المحل أسود تو (Dākhil al-maḥall aswad tō) (Inside the store, it's dark black.)
- Person 2: الأزرق فاتح ممتاز في هذه الغرفة (Al-azraq fātiḥ mumtāz fī hādhih al-ghurfah) (Light blue is excellent in this room.)
