When to use?

When use the subjunctive in French?

The subjunctive is used to express actions which are uncertain. It is nearly always found in clauses introduced by qui or que.

The subjunctive is used normally in a subordinate clause (in other words, after the word que or some other conjuctions) where the preceding main clause requires the subjunctive.

If someone (A) is waiting something from another person (B) (or several people) = you have to use the subjonctive.

Now, if the person (B) doesn't agree with the resquest of the person (A) = when he will answer, he will use the subjonctive.

Examples

  • Je veux que tu le fasses = I want you to do it.
  • Que je fasse quoi? = What do you want I do?
  • Il faut que nous allions = it is necessary that we go.
