Thai Grammar: Negative Sentences

If you want to learn to speak Thai, it is important to learn how to form negative sentences. In this lesson, you will learn how to create negative sentences in Thai.

Basic Negative Sentences

To form a basic negative sentence in Thai, you just need to add the word "ไม่" (mâi) before the verb. For example:

Thai Pronunciation North Azerbaijani
ฉันไม่กินข้าว chăn mâi gin kâao Mən dəvət yemirəm
เขาไม่เข้าห้องน้ำ khăo mâi khâo hâwng nám O, su şalğamdan keçmədən özümə gələ bilməzdim.
เขาไม่อยู่ที่บ้าน khăo mâi yùu têe bâan O, evdə deyil.
ฉันไม่เข้าใจ chăn mâi khâo jai Mən başa düşmürəm.

As you can see, the word "ไม่" (mâi) indicates the negation in the sentence.

Negative Questions

To form a negative question in Thai, you just need to add the word "ไหม" (măi) at the end of the sentence. For example:

Thai Pronunciation North Azerbaijani
เขาไม่ไปหรือ khăo mâi bpai rĕu O, gedib yoxdur?
คุณไม่ชอบไหม khun mâi chôrp măi Sən sevmirsənmi?
เขาไม่รู้ไหม khăo mâi rúu măi O, bilmir?

In the examples above, the word "ไหม" (măi) at the end of the sentence indicates that it is a question.

Negative Imperative Sentences

To form a negative imperative sentence in Thai, you just need to add the word "ไม่" (mâi) before the verb, and add the word "ไป" (bpai) after the verb. For example:

Thai Pronunciation North Azerbaijani
ไม่ไป mâi bpai Gedilməz
ไม่เข้ามา mâi khâo maa Daxil olunmaz
ไม่กิน mâi gin Yenməz

In the examples above, the word "ไม่" (mâi) before the verb indicates negation, and the word "ไป" (bpai) after the verb indicates the imperative form.

Negative Adjectives

To form a negative adjective in Thai, you just need to add the word "ไม่" (mâi) before the adjective. For example:

Thai Pronunciation North Azerbaijani
ไม่ดี mâi dii Yaxşı deyil
ไม่เร็ว mâi reo Tez deyil
ไม่สบาย mâi sà-baai Yaxşı deyil

In the examples above, the word "ไม่" (mâi) before the adjective indicates negation.
