Basic Greetings

Greetings are a fundamental part of any conversation. Here are some basic Afrikaans phrases you can use to greet someone:

  • Hallo - Hello
  • Goeie môre - Good morning
  • Goeie dag - Good day
  • Goeie middag - Good afternoon
  • Goeie naand - Good evening

Notice that Afrikaans has formal and informal ways of addressing people. Hallo is informal and can be used with friends or family, while the formal greetings are used with strangers or people in positions of authority.

Introducing Yourself

Introducing Others

Now, let's look at some phrases you can use when introducing other people to each other.

  • Hier is my vriend, Jan. - This is my friend, Jan.
  • Laat my jou voorstel aan my vrou, Anna. - Let me introduce you to my wife, Anna.
  • Ek wil graag vir jou meetrouweling, Tessa, voorstel. - I would like to introduce you to my future daughter-in-law, Tessa.

When someone introduces themselves to you, it's polite to respond with a phrase like Aangename kennis, which means "Nice to meet you".

  • Aangename kennis. - Nice to meet you.
  • Bly om jou te ontmoet. - Pleased to meet you.
