Cebuano Vocabulary - Colors

Hi Cebuano learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn the colors in Cebuano. Colors are very important in our daily lives as they are a part of our surroundings. They are also used to describe emotions, feelings, and even personalities. Knowing the colors in Cebuano will help you communicate better with native speakers and understand their culture. Let's get started!

Basic Colors

Let's begin with the basic colors:

Cebuano Pronunciation English
Bughaw "boo-haw" Blue
Pula "poo-lah" Red
Dilaw "dee-lahw" Yellow
Asul "ah-sool" Orange
Itom "ee-tom" Black
Puti "poo-tee" White
Berde "ber-dee" Green
  • Sample Dialogue:

Person 1: Unsa duha ka favorite nga kolor? (What are your two favorite colors?) Person 2: Akong favorite nga kolor mao ang bughaw ug puti. (My favorite colors are blue and white.)

Secondary Colors

Now, let's learn the secondary colors. These colors are a combination of the basic colors:

Cebuano Pronunciation English
Lila "lih-lah" Purple
Kape "kah-peh" Brown
Rosas "ro-sas" Pink
  • Sample Dialogue:

Person 1: Asa man ka paliton nga sapatos? (Where will you buy shoes?) Person 2: Paliton ko sa tindahan kay nindot ang ilang lila nga sapatos. (I will buy them at the store because they have nice purple shoes.)

Advanced Colors

Lastly, let's learn some advanced colors:

Cebuano Pronunciation English
Pilak "pee-lak" Silver
Oro "oh-roh" Gold
Koral "ko-ral" Coral
Pastel "pas-tel" Pastel
Koral hubog "ko-ral hoo-bog" Coral Reef
  • Sample Dialogue:

Person 1: Naglakaw ko sa baybayon. Nindot ang mga koral ug pastel nga mga bato didto. (I walked on the beach. The coral and pastel rocks are beautiful there.) Person 2: Oo, nindot sad siya tan-awon. (Yes, they are also nice to look at.)

Colors can be used to describe a lot of things. For example, in Cebuano idioms, colors can be used to express emotions like being angry, happy, or jealous. Some examples are "mapula ang dugo" (angry), "nagduwa sa bughaw nga kalipay" (very happy), and "mapula ang mata" (jealous). In Cebu, a famous dish is the "sinuglaw" which is a combination of grilled pork belly and raw fish. The name "sinuglaw" is derived from the colors "sinugba" (grilled) and "kilaw" (raw).

To improve your Cebuano Vocabulary, you can also use the Polyglot Club website. Find native speakers and ask them any questions!
