Kashmiri Grammar - Questions

Hi Kashmiri learners! 😊

In this lesson, we will look at how to ask questions in Kashmiri. Asking questions is an essential part of any language, and Kashmiri is no exception. Whether you're asking for directions, ordering food at a restaurant, or just trying to make conversation with a native speaker, you'll need to know how to ask questions in Kashmiri.

Before we begin, make sure you have a basic understanding of Kashmiri Grammar. If you haven't already, check out our previous lesson on Kashmiri Grammar basics.

Basic Questions

Let's start with some basic questions. In Kashmiri language, there are different ways to ask a question depending on the context.

Kashmiri Pronunciation English
क्याह॒ aah kya-ha What is this?
चेकि? cheki? What?
चुयॊच्याव aav-she-sa-neh? chuyochyav? How much?
कृजर्याव? kuj-yar-yav? What to do?
कृज नेह? kuj- neh? What happened?

Example:

  • Person 1: क्याह॒? (What is this?)
  • Person 2: यलि ब्येन् (This is a pen)

Yes/No Questions

Yes/No questions in Kashmiri can often be formed simply by raising the intonation at the end of a statement. Here are some examples:

Kashmiri Pronunciation English
uhi gachhidah? Did he/she go?
अ॒सि॒ म॒चुय तॊरुख?turu Are you hungry?
अयि ख्वाब ayi khwaab? Is this a dream?
उन्दॊ उमिडोसॊडॊइड (ondai umidasorda?) Is this your book?

Example:

  • Person 1: अ॒सि॒ म॒चुय तॊरुख? (Are you hungry?)
  • Person 2: नह, म॒दयॊख। (No, I'm not hungry)

Question Words

Kashmiri, like many other languages, has specific question words that are used when asking various types of questions. Let's take a look at some of the most common ones:

Kashmiri Pronunciation English
क्याह॒ aah kya-ha What?
kuj gard? Where?
kuj mot'vun gard? Where is the bathroom?
कृज आ॒पिशियह॒रै kuj aapishiyahrai? When?
कृज॒चि॒ प्रास kujachi praas? How?
कृज फ़ैसॊल? kuj faisul? Why?

Example:

  • Person 1: कृजে॒चि प्रासॊ ? (How?)
  • Person 2: आसान ,।यीसी साती यॊगतॊ। (Easy, this is suitable for you)

Indirect Questions

Indirect questions in Kashmiri are formed by using the word question first and then the actual question in the sentence. Here are some examples:

Kashmiri Pronunciation English
क्याह॒ उनुखॊउस शॊलॊह ? kya-ha unukhus sholoha? Can you tell me what this is?
रॊयॊमन नॊकर चॊचि संभवॊरै? royuman nokar choci sambhavorai? Do you know where the employee is?
कृज करुनयेह सॊरह खुश्यॊमडॊइंडॊ? kuj karunyeh sorah khushyomdoinde? Could you ask them when they will arrive?

Example:

  • Person 1: क्याह॒ उनुखॊउस शॊलॊह ? (Can you tell me what this is?)
  • Person 2: यह।, वोह एक पें है (Yes, that's a pen.)
