Central Kurdish Vocabulary - Express Surprise

Hi Central Kurdish learners! 😊
In this lesson, we'll learn how to express surprise in Central Kurdish. Being able to show surprise or shock in a conversation is essential, and it will help you better understand the nuances of the language.

General expressions

Let's start with some general expressions that you can use to show that you're surprised:

خودایا !! xudāyā Oh my God!
واش !! wāsh Oh!
ناگواری !! nāg(u)ārī How unfortunate! / That's too bad!
چاو !! chāw What the hell!

  • Person 1: مامۆستا گۆڕخانه‌ سوود نه‌داتەوە. (Mamosta gorkhané swud nahdátewé.) (The teacher doesn't give us homework.)
  • Person 2: ناگواری! (Nāg(u)ārī!) (How unfortunate! / That's too bad!)
  • Person 1: ئه‌و دیمی دیکه‌ پێ هه‌ستێكی بەزێک ژوورەوە. (Ew dímî díka pê hest(é)kî bezek zhúrewe.) (That ant entered with a tiny tail.)
  • Person 2: کله‌وه‌! (Kalewe!) (Incredible!)
  • Person 1: ده‌وه‌م هێمایه‌م لێبه‌ریر دۆنه‌ ده‌خاتە. (Dowham hemayé(l)m labberír dóna dekhăté.) (My second cousin married his aunt.)
  • Person 2: چاو! (Chāw!) (What the hell!)

Surprise when hearing good news

If you want to show surprise after hearing good news, you can use the following:

  • Person 1: منیشی دیكی دیاری کردیم (Ménîshî díkî dyari kerdîm.) (We chose the type of our new car.)

Expressing disbelief

When you want to show disbelief in what someone is saying, these expressions might come in handy:

وایستە! waysté! That's incredible! / Are you kidding?
ئەمە هەڵوێست نییە. am(é) helwést nîyé That can't be right. / That's impossible.

  • Person 1: من داشتم لەم کاتە ڕۆژانەی دوو خاتوومە تاو دەخاتم. (Mén dashetem le(l)m kat(é) rojané(y)é dow khat(w)umé taw dekhātem.) (I used to eat two loaves of bread every day.)
  • Person 2: باڵایەوە! (Bala(y)awé!) (Nonsense! / Rubbish!)
  • Person 1: دەخەنی هەموو دیوانەکان رۆژایەکی دیاری کردیتەوە؟ (Dexenî hem(w)ó dyewanekan rojayeke dyarikerditewé?) (Did you really choose a single day for the weddings of all the poets?)
  • Person 2: وایستە! (Waysté!) (That's incredible! / Are you kidding?)

Dialogue

  • Person 1: وای! / زۆر خۆشحالم! (Wa(y)! / Zor xóshhalém!) (Wow! / I'm very happy!)
  • Person 2: چاڵا! چە بوو کاتێک بەرزی ئاسمانی لە ڕۆژ زانیاری کرد. / (Chalá! Ch(o) bwó katek berzé(y)é asmaní le(l)m roz zanyarí kerd.) (Really! When were you able to get astronomical data during the day?)
