Bengali Grammar - Conditional Mood

Hi Bengali learners! 😊
In today's lesson, we will be discussing the conditional mood in Bengali. The conditional mood is used to express a hypothetical situation or an event that may or may not happen in the future. It is also used to express wishes and desires.

Overview

The conditional mood in Bengali is formed by adding the suffixes -তে/-তেই/-তেও/-তের/-তেন to the verb stem. The suffixes are added depending on the person and number of the subject.

Formation

The suffixes for the conditional mood are as follows:

  • -তে for the first person singular (I)
  • -তেই for the second person singular (you)
  • -তেও for the third person singular (he/she/it)
  • -তের for the first person plural (we)
  • -তেন for the second person plural (you)

For example, the verb খেলা (to play) has the following forms in the conditional mood:

  • খেলতে (I will play)
  • খেলতেই (you will play)
  • খেলতেও (he/she/it will play)
  • খেলতের (we will play)
  • খেলতেন (you will play)

Usage

The conditional mood is used to express a hypothetical situation or an event that may or may not happen in the future. It is also used to express wishes and desires.

For example:

  • আমি যদি সময় থাকে, তাহলে আমি গান শুনতে যাবো। (If I have time, I will listen to songs.)
  • আমি চাই যদি আমার বন্ধুরা আমাকে সাহায্য করে। (I wish my friends would help me.)

Conclusion

We have discussed the formation and usage of the conditional mood in Bengali. We hope this lesson has helped you gain a better understanding of the conditional mood.
