Igbo Grammar - Future Tense

Hi Igbo learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will be discussing the future tense in Igbo. The future tense is used to talk about events that will happen in the future. It is important to understand how to use the future tense correctly in order to communicate effectively in Igbo.

Forming the Future Tense

The future tense in Igbo is formed by adding the suffix "-na" to the verb stem. For example, the verb "kpọ" (to write) becomes "kpọna" (will write).

Using the Future Tense

The future tense is used to talk about events that will happen in the future. It can also be used to make predictions or assumptions about the future. For example:

  • Ndị ọzọ nọ na-abịa n'ime ụbọchị. (Those people will come to the party.)
  • Ọ bụrụ na ị nwee ndị ọzọ. (It looks like we will meet those people.)

Examples

Igbo Pronunciation English Translation
Ị na-abịa i na-abia I will come
Ị na-agba i na-agba I will buy
Ị na-adịghị i na-adighi I will not do
Ị na-akwụsị i na-akuisi I will ask
Ị na-arụ i na-aru I will see
