Hello Portuguese learners,

Did you know that one of the main mistakes in Portuguese is the use of Porquê, Porque, Por quê and Por que?

In this lesson, you will see the difference between them.

Porque[edit | edit source]

  • Is always used in responses to explain something or to indicate a cause
  • Means because
  • We can use Pois instead of porque

Examples

  • Não fui para a festa porque estava doente. / Não fui para a festa pois estava doente.

(I didn't go to the party because I was sick)

  • Comprei esse sapato porque estava mais barato. / Comprei esse sapato pois estava mais barato.

(I bought this shoe because it was cheaper)

Porquê[edit | edit source]

  • It is noun and is used in place of "reason" / "motive"
  • Means: reason, why
  • Porquê always comes with an article, pronoun, adjective or numeral.

Examples

  • Não consigo entender o porquê ele foi dormir cedo.

(I can't understand why he went to sleep early.)

  • O porquê de não estar conversando é porque quero estar concentrada.

(The reason I am not talking is because I want to be focused.)

Por que[edit | edit source]

  • used to ask questions, usually at the beginning of the sentence.
  • Means why

Examples

  • Por que não está conversando?

(Why aren't you talking?)

  • Por que você não foi na festa ontem?

(Why didn't you go to the party yesterday?)

  • Por que ela foi lá?

(Why did she go there?)

Por quê[edit | edit source]

  • Used whenever a point comes (period, interrogative, exclamation) (?, !, .)
  • Also means why

Examples

  • Ela foi lá, por quê?

(She went there, why?)

  • Estudei bastante ontem. Sabe por quê?

(I studied a lot yesterday. Do you know why?)
