Maltese Vocabulary - Fruits

Hi Maltese learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will be learning Maltese vocabulary about fruits. Fruits are an important part of the Mediterranean diet and Maltese culture, where locally grown produce is celebrated in traditional dishes. By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and talk about various fruits in Maltese.

Take some time to dive into these other pages after completing this lesson: Food & Drinks.

Vocabulary[edit | edit source]

Fruits are "frott" in Maltese. Here are some of the most common fruits found in Malta:

Maltese Pronunciation English
larinġa la-rin-gah orange
tadam ta-dam apple
bajtar tax-xitwa bai-tar tax shi-twa persimmon
żgħar taċ-ċitrun zar tac chit-run lime
frott tat-tuffieħa frott tat tuf-fee-eha pineapple
frott tal-bużbież frott tal-buz-beez strawberry
żeżla ze-zla banana
tin tin fig
qastan qas-tan chestnut
karamelli ka-ra-mel-lee pomegranate
lamponi lam-po-nee raspberry
warda tat-tuffieħa warr-da tat tuff-fee-eha watermelon

Pronunciation Tips[edit | edit source]

In Maltese, words are pronounced exactly as they are written. The Maltese language is written in the Latin script and the sounds are similar to Italian and Arabic.

One thing to keep in mind is the use of the ħ (ħin, qasħa, etc.) which can be challenging for non-native speakers. Also, the letter g in Maltese is pronounced as a voiced consonant, like the j in the English word "jump".

To improve your Maltese Vocabulary, you can also use the Polyglot Club website. Find native speakers and ask them any questions!

Dialogue[edit | edit source]

To see these new words in context, let's have a dialogue:

  • Person 1: Taf fejn nista nitnexxiel l-arinġiet tajbin? (Do you know where I can find good oranges?)
  • Person 2: Hemm ħafna ż-żeżla fl-iskola. (There are many bananas at the school.)
  • Person 1: Tajjeb, għandi ħażin qed niriżen. Tista tindini bajtar tax-xitwa? (Great, I'm feeling sick. Can you get me a persimmon?)
  • Person 2: Biss jekk tkun tista tirranġaha! (Only if you can arrange it!)

Cultural Notes[edit | edit source]

In Malta, fruits and vegetables are celebrated during the harvest season, known as il-Ħarġa tal-Ġimgħa Mqaddsa. During this time, locals gather to celebrate the bounty of the local produce with traditional foods and activities.

One of the most popular fruits in Malta is the prickly pear, or bajtar tax-xewk in Maltese. It is often eaten raw, cooked, or as a sweet jam.
