What is the Armenian Past Subjunctive?[edit | edit source]
The past subjunctive is used to express an unfulfilled desire of someone having done something or something being the case in present or in the past.
How to form the Armenian Past Subjunctive:[edit | edit source]
The past subjunctive is formed by adding the endings below to the verb stem.
Conjugations of verbs հանդիպել - “to meet” (Armenian Past Subjunctive)[edit | edit source]
Below the conjugations of verbs հանդիպել - “to meet”, and հասկանալ - “to understand” are given.
Examples[edit | edit source]
Here are examples of uses of the past subjunctive.
1) Երանի՜ երեկ կարողանայի Արմինեի հետ այդ մասին զրուցել։ If only I were able to talk about that to Armine yesterday.
2) Երանի՜ հիմա կարողանայի Արմինեի հետ այդ մասին զրուցել։ I only I were able to talk about that to Armine now.
3) Նա ցանկանում էր, որ ես հասկանայի իրեն: He wanted me to understand him.
4) Եթե ավելի լավ սովորեիր, ավելի շատ կիմանայիր: If you studied better you would know more.
Negative Form of the Armenian Past Subjunctive[edit | edit source]
The negative form of both future and past subjunctive tenses are formed simply by adding the letter “չ” to the affirmative subjunctive:
Examples: Negative Form of the Armenian Past Subjunctive[edit | edit source]
1) Նա գնաց տաքսիով, որպեսզի չուշանա: He went with a taxi so that he would not be late.
2) Ծնողներն ուզում էին, որ իրենց երեխաները դժվարություններ չտեսնեին: The parents wanted their children not to see difficulties.
