== Basic Question Formation ==
The basic structure for forming questions in Lao is quite simple. All you need to do is add a question particle at the end of the sentence. The most common question particle is ແມ່ນ (mɛ̌n). For example:
* ທ່ານຊື່ອອະໄຣ? (tâan sɯ̌ɯ ɤa rai?) - What is your name?
* ທ່ານເປັນອະໄຣ? (tâan pɛn ɤa rai?) - What are you?
* ທ່ານມີຊີວິດອະໄຣ? (tâan mi siiwít ɤa rai?) - What do you have?
You can also use the question particle ແມ່ນ (mɛ̌n) to ask yes/no questions. For example:
* ທ່ານເປັນຄົນລາວແມ່ນ? (tâan pɛn kon lao mɛ̌n?) - Are you Lao?
* ທ່ານມີບ້ານແມ່ນ? (tâan mi bâan mɛ̌n?) - Do you have a house?
* ທ່ານຊອກໂທລະສັບແມ່ນ? (tâan sɔ̌k tɔlàsap mɛ̌n?) - Do you have a phone?
== Advanced Question Formation ==
In addition to the basic question formation, there are some more advanced ways to form questions in Lao.

Lao Grammar - Questions

Hi Lao learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will focus on the question words and how to form questions in Lao.

Once you've mastered this lesson, take a look at these related pages: Personal pronouns, Negation, Give your Opinion & Plurals.

Basic Questions[edit | edit source]

Forming basic questions in Lao is quite simple. You only need to add the question word at the beginning of the statement. For example, the question word "ເຈົ້າ" (chao) means "you" and can be added to the beginning of the sentence to form a question about the person you are talking to. The intonation should be raised at the end of the question sentence.

  • ເຈົ້າມີນາງເທື່ອ? (chao mai nang tae?) - Do you have a younger sister?

Here are some of the most common question words to use:

Lao Pronunciation English
ຫາກ hark if/whether
ດີ້ din how much/many
ເມືອງ maung where
ວັນເດືອນ van daen when
ຫວຽດ hwaid how
ຈົງ chong what
ບວກ bok why

For example:

  • ເຂົ້າມາຈະປີ້ປືການບອດເຂົ້າສູນໃດດ້ວຍຫ້ອງ? (khao ma ja bok pikkan boat khao sun dai wai hong?) - Why do you want to join the army with the room?

Forming Questions with ແລະ (lae)[edit | edit source]

Another way to form questions in Lao is to use the word "ແລະ" (lae) which means "and" or "as well as". This word is added at the end of a statement to form a question.

  • ຂ້ອຍມີເພີ່ມປີ້ສູງໃດເຂົ້າສູນຫ້ອງແລະມີໄຟຟ້າສົ້ມ ຫາກເຂົ້າສູນໃດເລີຍເຈົ້າໄດ້ໄວ້ບໍ? (khoy moi phuem boat sun dai khao sun wai hong lae mai fai sama kao boat lai?)- Do you have a big room and a small window since when did you buy them?

Dialogue[edit | edit source]

Let's see some examples of questions being used in a dialogue:

  • Person 1: ຕິດຕາມໃນຂອງເຈົ້າທີ່ເກີດ? (tid tamai now kong chao ti gap dao?) - What did you eat for breakfast?
  • Person 2: ຂ້ອຍກະທຳຈິງ ຫຼືກະທຳປະເພດອາຫານ ທີ່ລະບົບ ຂ້ອຍໄດ້ນຳເຂົ້າຫຼາຍກວ່າໃນຄວາມເກີດ (khoy katham ching ho kgatham paepan ti leebok khoy dai nam khoy nai yuaga kao ti khamked) - I ate porridge or rice depending on the menu. I ate more than usual because I was hungry.
