Past Tense in Korean

Korean language is an interesting and complex language, especially when it comes to grammar. In this lesson, you will learn about the past tense in Korean language and how to form past tense verbs.

Forming Past Tense Verbs

In Korean language, you can form the past tense of a verb by adding the suffix '-았/었다' or '-였/았다' to the verb stem. Here are some examples:

Korean Pronunciation North Azerbaijani
가다 (to go) 가- ged-
가다 (past tense) 갔- ged-
먹다 (to eat) 먹- yemək-
먹다 (past tense) 먹었- yedik-
있다 (to be) 있- var-
있다 (past tense) 있었- vardıq-

As you can see, the suffix '-았/었다' is used for verbs that end in a vowel, while the suffix '-였/았다' is used for verbs that end in a consonant.

Using Past Tense Verbs in Sentences

Now that you know how to form past tense verbs in Korean language, let's see how to use them in sentences. Here are some examples:

  • 저는 어제 영화를 봤어요. (I watched a movie yesterday.)
  • 우리 친구들은 지난 주에 서울에 갔어요. (Our friends went to Seoul last week.)
  • 어제는 비가 왔었어요. (It rained yesterday.)

Notice that the past tense verb comes at the end of the sentence in Korean language. Also, the subject particle '은/는' and the object particle '을/를' are used just like in present tense sentences.

Interesting Facts about Korean Language

It was invented in the 15th century by King Sejong the Great. - Korean language has six different levels of formality, each used in different situations. - Korean language has many loanwords from English, such as '컴퓨터' (computer) and '모바일' (mobile).
