Halh Mongolian Vocabulary for Family Members

In Halh Mongolian, there are different words for family members depending on their relation to you. Here are some of the most common ones:

Talking About Your Family

To talk about your family in Halh Mongolian, you can use different phrases, depending on the situation.

Introducing your family

When you meet someone new or are asked about your family, you can use the following sentences:

  • Миний ээж нь... (Mini eéj n, "My mother is...")
  • Миний аав нь... (Mini aav n, "My father is...")
  • Миний ах нь... (Mini ah n, "My elder sister is...")
  • Миний эгч нь... (Mini egch n, "My elder brother is...")
  • Миний дүү нь... (Mini düü n, "My younger sister is...")
  • Миний атаа нь... (Mini ataa n, "My younger brother is...")
  • Миний төрсөнд нь... (Mini törsond n, "In my family there is...")

For example:

Миний ах нь сургуульд ажилладаг. (Mini ah n surguuld ajiladag., "My older sister works at a school.")

Надад ээж байгаа. Та нартай танилцаж явцгаая. (Nadad eéj baiga. Ta nartai tanilcäj javtsğıyä., "I have a mother. Let's introduce our families.")

Asking about someone's family

If you want to ask someone about their family, you can use the following sentence:

  • Танд эхнэртэй ямар хүн байгаа вэ? (Tand ehnertei yamar khün baigaa ve?, "Do you have any siblings?")

For instance:

Танд эхнэртэй ямар хүн байгаа вэ? (Tand ehnertei yamar khün baigaa ve?, "Do you have any siblings?")

Хүүхдүүд байна. (Khüükhüüd baına., "I have children.")

Talking about your family activities

When talking about activities with your family, you can use the following sentences:

  • Бидтэй нийгэмд тоглодог. (Bidteı nıygämtd toglodog., "We play together.")
  • Маргашийн баялааны хооллолд орнуудыг яваад гэртээ автдаг. (Margashii-n bayalaanı khoolold ornuudıg javääd ger tee avtdag., "We go picking mushrooms and bring them home.")
  • Гар утсанд уураа шигдэхээр өндөрт орж өрнөх нь бидний дуртай зүйл байна. (Gar utsand uuraa shigdehee öndört orj örnög n bidnii durtaı züıl baına., "Going to the mountain to pick berries with our hands is something we deeply cherish.")
