What are prepositions?

Prepositions are words that show the relationship between a noun or pronoun and other words in a sentence. They usually indicate direction, location, time, manner, or degree. In Marathi, prepositions always come before a noun or pronoun and cannot stand alone in a sentence.

Types of Prepositions

There are several types of prepositions in Marathi, including:

Simple Prepositions

Simple prepositions are the most common type of preposition used in Marathi sentences. They are used to indicate relationships such as time, place, and direction. Some examples of simple prepositions in Marathi include वर (on), मध्ये (in), बाजूने (beside), and च्या जवळ (near). Here are a few more examples:

Marathi Pronunciation English
च्या बाजूने cyā bājūne Beside him
गाडीच्या जवळ gāḍīcyā javḷa Near the car
पुस्तकाच्या वरती pustakācyā varatī On the book
झाडामध्ये jhāḍāmadhye In the tree

Compound Prepositions

Compound prepositions are formed by joining two or more words together to make a new word. In Marathi, these are often used to indicate relationships of time, place, or direction. Some examples of compound prepositions in Marathi include जवळून जवळ (closer and closer), वरासाठी (for the sake of), and अंतःस्थ (innermost). Here are a few more examples:

Marathi Pronunciation English
झाडांच्या मध्ये jhāḍā̃cyā madhye Among the trees
बाजूला बाजूला bājūlā bājūlā All around
त्याला चेतावणीसाठी tyālā cetāvaṇīsāṭhī For warning him
मला आरोग्यासाठी malā ārogysāṭhī For my health

Participle Prepositions

Participle prepositions are formed by converting verbs or adjectives into prepositions. They express the relationship between the noun and the other words in a sentence. In Marathi, participle prepositions are used to indicate manner, condition, or cause. Some examples of participle prepositions in Marathi include मधून (from), मागून (after), जवळून (through), and अंगावरून् (on account of). Here are a few more examples:

आमच्या कामातून जाऊन āmcyā kāmātūn jā'ūn After finishing our work
पुस्तक वाचून मला मजा येते pustak vācūn malā majā yētē I enjoy reading books
विविध विषयांपासून माझी ओळख वाढतेय vividh viṣayāṃpāsūn mājhī ōḷakh vāḍhatēy My knowledge is increasing due to various subjects

How to use Prepositions

Prepositions are crucial for constructing meaningful and grammatically correct Marathi sentences. Here are a few tips to keep in mind while using prepositions:

  • Always use the correct preposition based on the situation and context in which it will be used.
  • Prepositions are always followed by a noun or a pronoun. They cannot stand alone in a sentence.
  • Don't confuse prepositions with postpositions - postpositions are similar to prepositions, but they come after a noun or a pronoun instead of before it.
  • Practice, practice, practice! Using prepositions correctly can take some time and effort, so don't be discouraged if you make mistakes at first.

Conclusion

In this lesson, you learned about the different types of prepositions in Marathi, including simple prepositions, compound prepositions, and participle prepositions. You also learned how to use prepositions in Marathi sentences to indicate location, time, and movement. Keep practicing and using prepositions correctly will come naturally to you in no time.
