Numbers 0-10
Here are the numbers from 0 to 10 in Haitian:
Haitian | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
zero | zeh-ro | Zero |
un | un | One |
deux | deuh | Two |
trois | twa | Three |
quatre | kat | Four |
cinq | sank | Five |
six | sis | Six |
sept | set | Seven |
huit | wit | Eight |
neuf | nèf | Nine |
dix | dees | Ten |
It is important to take note of the pronunciation of the numbers, as it can be tricky for non-native speakers to grasp.
Numbers 11-20
The numbers from 11 to 20 follow a similar pattern in Haitian. They are formed by using the word for ten (dix) and adding the corresponding digits from 1 to 9:
Haitian | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
onze | ohn-z | Eleven |
douze | dooz | Twelve |
treize | trehz | Thirteen |
quatorze | ka-tohz | Fourteen |
quinze | ka-ze | Fifteen |
seize | sez | Sixteen |
dix-sept | dee-set | Seventeen |
dix-huit | dee-wit | Eighteen |
dix-neuf | dee-nef | Nineteen |
Note that dix-sept, dix-huit, and dix-neuf are formed by adding dix (ten) to the corresponding digits 7, 8, and 9.
Numbers 20-100
After the number twenty, Haitian follows a pattern similar to English. Twenty is vingt in Haitian, and numbers 21-29 are formed by adding the digit to vingt (with a hyphen between them). For example, twenty-one is vingt-et-un.
Here are the numbers from 20 to 100 in Haitian:
Haitian | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
vingt | vhent | Twenty |
vingt-et-un | vhent-eh-un | Twenty-one |
trente | trènt | Thirty |
quarante | ka-raht | Forty |
cinquante | sank-ant | Fifty |
soixante | swa-sahnt | Sixty |
soixante-dix | swa-sahnt-deez | Seventy |
quatre-vingts | ka-treh-vehnt | Eighty |
quatre-vingts-dix | ka-treh-vehnt-deez | Ninety |
cent | sehnt | One hundred |
Note that Haitian uses the word quatre-vingts for eighty (literally, four twenties) and quatre-vingts-dix for ninety (literally, four twenties ten).
