SlovenianVocabulary → Shopping and bargaining

As a Slovenian language teacher with 20 years of experience, I'm excited to teach you how to shop and bargain in Slovenian. This is an important skill to possess as shopping is an everyday activity that you will encounter during your stay in Slovenia. In this lesson, we will focus on basic vocabulary, numbers, and cultural norms in shopping.

Vocabulary

We will start by learning some basic Slovenian words and phrases that are commonly used when shopping. Here are some examples:

You can practice these words and phrases until you're familiar enough to use them in real-life situations.

Numbers

When shopping, you'll also need to use numbers. Slovenian numbers are somewhat similar to other Slavic languages such as Serbian, Croatian, and Russian. Here are the numbers in Slovenian:

Slovenian Pronunciation English
Trgovina Trr-go-vee-na Store
Nakupovanje Nakoo-po-va-nye Shopping
Blagajna Bla-ga-y-na Cashier
Promocija Pro-mo-tzee-ya Promotion
Popust Po-poost Discount
Kartica za popuste Kar-tee-za- po-poost-te Discount card
Izdelek Iz-deh-lek Product
Obleka Ob-lee-ka Clothes
Obutev Ob-oo-tev Footwear
Vrhnje oblačilo Vr-nye ob-la-chee-lo Outerwear
Domače živali Do-ma-cheh zhee-va-lee Pets
Hrana in pijača Hra-na een pee-ya-cha Food and drinks
Kosmetika Kos-me-tee-ka Cosmetics
Here are some examples of how you can use numbers when shopping:
  • Ena majica, prosim. (One shirt, please.)
  • To stane devet evrov. (This costs nine euros.)
  • Dve vrečki krompirja, prosim. (Two bags of potatoes, please.)
It's important to also remember the difference between "evro" (euro) and "cent" (cent).
  • 1 evro = 100 centov
  • 1 euro = 100 cents

Cultural Norms

Like in any other culture, there are some cultural norms and customs that you should be aware of when shopping in Slovenia. Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Bargaining is not common practice in Slovenia, especially in larger stores. You can try bargaining at markets, but it's not always successful.
  • Be polite and greet the shop assistant upon entering the store.
  • It's not common to touch the products when browsing in Slovenian stores, as it's considered impolite. However, you can ask the shop assistant for assistance if you need to look at certain products.
  • Always ask the price before purchasing an item, even if it's not marked.
  • If you encounter any issues or have questions, don't hesitate to ask the shop assistant for help.
  • It's not customary to tip in Slovenia, but you can round up the amount if you're satisfied with the service.

Conclusion

I hope this lesson has been helpful in teaching you how to shop and bargain in Slovenian. Remember to practice your vocabulary and numbers until you're comfortable using them in real-life situations. Don't forget to also be aware of cultural norms and customs when shopping in Slovenia. Happy shopping!
