Introducing Yourself

When you meet someone for the first time, it's important to introduce yourself. Here's how to do it in Belarusian:

Belarusian Pronunciation English
Мяне зватайце... mya-nye zva-ta-ytse... My name is...
Я... ya... I am...

For example:

Belarusian Pronunciation English
Мяне зватайце Аляксандра. mya-nye zva-ta-ytse a-lyak-san-dra My name is Alexandra.
Я Іван. ya i-van I am Ivan.

You can also ask someone their name by saying:

Belarusian Pronunciation English
Як вас зватайце? yak vas zva-ta-ytse? What is your name?
Як вас звуць? yak vas zvoots'? What do they call you?

For example:

Belarusian Pronunciation English
Як вас зватайце? yak vas zva-ta-ytse? What is your name?
Мяне зватайце Марыя. mya-nye zva-ta-ytse ma-ree-ya My name is Maria.

Once you know someone's name, you can greet them using their name:

Belarusian Pronunciation English
Вітаю, [name]! vee-ta-yu, [name]! Hello, [name]!

For example:

Belarusian Pronunciation English
Вітаю, Андрэй! vee-ta-yu, an-drey! Hello, Andrew!
Вітаю, Яўген! vee-ta-yu, yaw-hen' Hello, Eugene!

Now that you know how to introduce yourself and greet people in Belarusian, try practicing with a friend or language partner!
