Giving opinions[edit | edit source]

In English, we use different adjectives to give opinions, such as "good", "bad", "interesting", "boring", etc. In Borana-Arsi-Guji Oromo, we also have adjectives to express our opinions. Let's learn some of them:

Borana-Arsi-Guji Oromo Pronunciation English
baayyeef /baːjjeːf/ good
jordadhuu /dʒɔrdadhuː/ bad
arfichiisu /aɾfitʃiisu/ interesting
qabaachuun /qabaːtʃuːn/ boring
dukkana /dukkaːna/ easy
gaari /gaːri/ difficult
qabaqabaa /qabaqabaː/ delicious
cufcinnaa /tʃufʃinnaa/ disgusting
hinjirruu /hinʤiɾruː/ beautiful
waangariiruu /waːŋgaɾiːruː/ ugly

To use these adjectives, we put them after the noun they describe. For example:

  • Borana-Arsi-Guji Oromo: Haraamallee baayyeef.
  • English: The food is good.
  • Borana-Arsi-Guji Oromo: Bilisummaa jordadhuu.
  • English: Freedom is bad.
  • Borana-Arsi-Guji Oromo: Walaloo arfichiisu.
  • English: The story is interesting.
  • Borana-Arsi-Guji Oromo: Korme qabaachuun.
  • English: The lesson is boring.
  • Borana-Arsi-Guji Oromo: Amma dabalata tokko dukkana.
  • English: But this exercise is easy.

  • Borana-Arsi-Guji Oromo: Janiisaa wal jaaqallu waangariiruu.

To reinforce what we have learned, let's practice using adjectives to give opinions in a dialogue.

Dialogue:

  • Person 1: Haraamalle baayyeef. (The food is good.)
  • Person 2: Eebbisaa qabaqabaa? (Is the meat delicious?)
  • Person 1: Yaa, qabaqabaa. (Yes, it's delicious.)
  • Person 2: Bilisummaa jordadhuu. (Freedom is bad.)
  • Person 1: Adee, bilisummaan duuti jordadhuu. (Yes, the situation with freedom is bad.)
  • Person 2: Walaloo arfichiisu. (The story is interesting.)
