In this lesson, we will learn about the future tense in Tigrinya. Understanding how to use this tense is crucial in speaking and understanding the language. This lesson is intended for intermediate learners.

The future tense in Tigrinya is used to describe actions that will happen in the future. In Tigrinya, the future tense is formed using the particle "እወ" (ewu) followed by the present tense verb. Unlike some languages, Tigrinya does not have a separate conjugation for future tense.

To form the future tense in Tigrinya, we use the particle "እወ" (ewu) followed by the present tense verb. Let's see some examples:

Tigrinya Pronunciation English
ኣምላኽ ኣብ ከተማ amelak ab ktama I will go to the market
አይደለም aydelem I will tell you
ትርጉም እያደገ trgum yadege Tomorrow he will come
ኣልበምን እይንረይ እንተኾነ alben ynrey entekene If he finishes, he will call me

In Tigrinya, the word "እወ" (ewu) cannot be omitted when we are using the future tense.

Dialogue: Using Future Tense[edit | edit source]

Here's a dialogue to help you practice the future tense in Tigrinya:

  • Person 1: ክንብሎ እወ ኣብ መንጎ መስከረም ይግበር እዩ? (knblo ewu ab mngu mskaerem yigbere eyu?) (Would you like to come with me to the market next Saturday?)
  • Person 2: ፍትሒ ኣይከኣል እንተዘይብሉ (fthi aykaal entezyebelu) (Sorry, I can't come)
