Hi Sinhala learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will be learning about education-related vocabulary in Sinhala. Education is very important, and we believe learning the vocabulary related to education in another language is key to understanding how education works in that language. Let's get started!

School Subjects[edit | edit source]

Here are some common school subjects and their Sinhala translations:

Sinhala Pronunciation English
විද්‍යාව "vidyawa" (vi-dya-wa) Science
ඉංග්‍රීසි "ingrisi" (in-gri-si) English
සාමාන්‍ය විෂයයන් "samanya vishayann" (sa-ma-nya vi-sha-yann) General subjects
ගණිතය "ganithaya" (ga-ni-tha-ya) Mathematics
සිංහල "sinhala" (sin-ha-la) Sinhala Language
ඉලිපිට විෂයයන් "lipitath vishayann" (li-pi-tath vi-sha-yann) Arts

Dialogue:

  • Person 1: මම සාමාන්‍ය විෂයයන් ගැන ඉංග්‍රීසියෙන් බාගත කරමින් සිංහලෙන් බාගත කරන්නේද? (Mama samanya vishayann ganna ingirisiyenne baa-gath karamin Sinhalen baa-gath karanne?" - "Do you prefer to study general subjects in English or in Sinhala?)
  • Person 2: මට සිංහල යන භාෂාවෙන් සාමාන්‍ය විෂයයන් පහලින් බාගත කරන්නේද. මම ඉංග්‍රීසියෙන් ඡායාරූප පොත් එකක් විකල්ප කරන්නෙමු. ("Mata Sinhala yana bhashawen samanya vishayann pahalun baa-gath karanne. Mama ingirisiyenne chayaa-rooma pota ekak wiklu-karanne-mu." - "I prefer to study general subjects in Sinhala. I read my chemistry textbook in English though.")

Levels of Education[edit | edit source]

Here are the levels of education and their Sinhala translations:

Sinhala Pronunciation English
පාසල් මාර්ගය "paasal mart" (pa-sal mart) Primary school
මධ්‍ය මාර්ගය "madya mart" (ma-dya mart) Middle school
විශ්වවිද්‍යාල පාඨමාලාව "vishwavidyalaya paathamalawa" (vish-wa-vi-dh-ya-la-paa-tha-ma-laa-va) University
ඉගෙන්ම මාර්ගය "ig-en-mart" (ig-en-mart) Education
සාමාන්‍ය මගින් ඉගැන්වීම "samanya magin inganawa" (sa-ma-nya ma-gin in-ga-na-wa) General studies

Dialogue:

  • Person 1: ඔබ විශ්වවිද්‍යාලයේ පාඨමාලාව ඉක්මනින් පාරිභෝගික පෙළේ පාසලකට ගෙන ඇතිද? (Oba vishwavidyalayayata paathamalawa ik-manin paaribhogikaya palessa-kata geynaa-etha?" - "Have you already graduated from university with a degree in management?")
  • Person 2: නැත්තටම ඉගෙනීම සම්පූර්ණයි. මම සාමාන්‍ය පොහොර විෂය හා මානව පොහොරවල අධික ප්‍රවීණියක් ලෙස ඉගෙන ගනිමින් මම ඉගෙනුම මාර්ගයක් විය. ("Nattama igenim sampurnayi. Mama samanya pohora vishaya haa mana pohora-vala adhika praveeniyak lesha igena-ganimin Mama ig-enum martak viya." - "Not yet, currently studying part-time for a professional degree in both general and management subjects.")

Here are some items you may find in a classroom and their Sinhala translations:

පැවිදියිකි සෙල්පණය "paawidikii helpnaya" (paa-wi-di-ki-i help-na-ya) Audio aid
සරල සැකිල්ල "sarala sekill" (sa-ra-la se-kill) Whiteboard
චරිතාපදය "charithapadaaya" (cha-ri-tha-pa-da-ya) Chalk
පරීක්ෂණ ද්‍රව්‍ය "parikshana dravya" (pa-riks-shan-dra-vya) Laboratory material

Dialogue:

  • Person 1: මගේ සම්පූර්ණ වාර්තා රැගෙන යන ඇයි? (Mage sampurna waartaa ragena ayei?" - "Have you received my full report?")
  • Person 2: ඔව්, මේ පොත ලිව්වා ඇති. සහ මෙම පිලිතුරු ගන්නේ සරල සැකිල්ල ලෙස පෙළ සදහා. ("Ow, meh pota livvaath aethi. Saahaa meh pi-lithurun gannaa sarala sekill lesa pelata." - "Yes, I have received it. And this document is for classroom use on a whiteboard.")
