== What are Nouns? ==

In grammar, nouns are words used to refer to a person, animal, place, thing, or an abstract idea. In Gujarati, nouns are called સંજ્ઞાનામ (sanjnaama).

For example, in the sentence "મારો નામ જોહાન છે" (Māro nām johān chhe), નામ (nām) means "name", which is a noun.

== Types of Nouns ==
== Types of Nouns ==

Nouns can be divided into two main categories: common nouns and proper nouns. Common nouns refer to general things, such as people, places, animals, and objects. Proper nouns refer to specific people, places, or things.
In Gujarati, nouns are generally classified into two types: જાતિનામ (jaatinaama) - "common noun" and વિશેષણામ (visheShnaama) - "proper noun".

=== Common Nouns ===
=== Common Nouns ===
Common nouns are words that refer to general things. Examples of common nouns include:

* Person: teacher, student, doctor
Common nouns refer to any ordinary person, place, thing or idea.
* Place: city, country, park

* Animal: dog, cat, bird
Examples:
* Object: book, chair, table

Proper nouns, on the other hand, refer to specific persons, places or things.

=== Proper Nouns ===
=== Proper Nouns ===
Proper nouns are words that refer to specific people, places, or things. Examples of proper nouns include:

* Person: Mr. Patel, Mrs. Shah, Dr. Desai
Proper nouns always begin with a capital letter and refer to a specific name or title of a person, place or thing.
* Place: Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India
* Animal: Fluffy, Spot, Whiskers
* Object: The Taj Mahal, The Eiffel Tower, The Great Wall of China

== Forming Nouns ==
Examples:

In Gujarati, nouns can be formed in a variety of ways. Here are some of the most common ways to form nouns:

* Adding suffixes: Adding suffixes such as -a, -u, -i, and -o to a root word can create a noun. For example, the root word “vat” (meaning “house”) can be changed to “vata” (meaning “house”).
== Gender of Nouns ==

* Compound words: Compound words are created by combining two or more words together. For example, the words “vat” (meaning “house”) and “mandir” (meaning “temple”) can be combined to form the compound word “vatmandir” (meaning “house temple”).
In Gujarati, just like in many other languages, nouns also have gender - masculine, feminine, or neuter.

* Reduplication: Reduplication is the process of repeating a word or part of a word to create a new word. For example, the word “bhar” (meaning “fill”) can be reduplicated to form the word “bharbhar” (meaning “filled up”).
Examples:

Once you have formed a noun, you can use it in a sentence. Here are some tips for using nouns in Gujarati:
== Plural Forms of Nouns ==

* Plural forms: Most nouns in Gujarati have both singular and plural forms. To form the plural of a noun, add the suffix -o to the end of the word. For example, the singular form of the word “vata” (meaning “house”) is “vato” (meaning “houses”).
In Gujarati, there is no specific plural form of most nouns. In fact, the plural is usually made by adding a word that means "more" or "many".

* Gender: Most nouns in Gujarati have both masculine and feminine forms. To form the feminine form of a noun, add the suffix -i to the end of the word. For example, the masculine form of the word “vata” (meaning “house”) is “vatni” (meaning “house”).
Examples:

* Possessive forms: To form the possessive form of a noun, add the suffix -na to the end of the word. For example, the possessive form of the word “vata” (meaning “house”) is “vatana” (meaning “my house”).

|-
| પુસ્તકો || Pustako || Books (literally "many books")
|-

* Person 1: તમને કેમ લાગે મારી પુસ્તકો? (Tamanē kēm lāgē mārī pustako?) (How do you like my books?)
* Person 2: તે અચ્છી છે. મને તમારી વસ્તુઓ પણ પસંદ છે. (Tē achchī chhe. Manē tamārī vastuo paṇ pasand chhe.) (It's good. I also like your things.)

We hope this lesson has helped you gain a better understanding of Gujarati nouns. With practice and patience, you will soon be able to form and use nouns with ease.

Gujarati Grammar - Nouns

Hi Gujarati learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about Gujarati nouns.

Take some time to dive into these other pages after completing this lesson: Questions, Negation & 0 to A1 Course.

What are Nouns?[edit | edit source]

In grammar, nouns are words used to refer to a person, animal, place, thing, or an abstract idea. In Gujarati, nouns are called સંજ્ઞાનામ (sanjnaama).

For example, in the sentence "મારો નામ જોહાન છે" (Māro nām johān chhe), નામ (nām) means "name", which is a noun.

Types of Nouns[edit | edit source]

In Gujarati, nouns are generally classified into two types: જાતિનામ (jaatinaama) - "common noun" and વિશેષણામ (visheShnaama) - "proper noun".

Common Nouns[edit | edit source]

Common nouns refer to any ordinary person, place, thing or idea.

Examples:

Gujarati Pronunciation English
કાકી Kākī Grandmother
સ્કૂલ Skūl School
ચાય Chāy Tea

Proper nouns, on the other hand, refer to specific persons, places or things.

Proper Nouns[edit | edit source]

Proper nouns always begin with a capital letter and refer to a specific name or title of a person, place or thing.

Examples:

Gujarati Pronunciation English
જોહાન Johān Johan
જુનાગઢ Junāgadha Junagadh
લિનક્સ Links Linux

Gender of Nouns[edit | edit source]

In Gujarati, just like in many other languages, nouns also have gender - masculine, feminine, or neuter.

Examples:

Gujarati Pronunciation English
પુરુષ PuruSh Masculine
સ્ત્રી Strī Feminine
નપુંસક Napunshak Neuter

Plural Forms of Nouns[edit | edit source]

In Gujarati, there is no specific plural form of most nouns. In fact, the plural is usually made by adding a word that means "more" or "many".

Examples:

Gujarati Pronunciation English
બાળકો Bālako Children (literally "more children")
પુસ્તકો Pustako Books (literally "many books")
વસ્તુઓ Vastuo Things (literally "many things")

Dialogue[edit | edit source]

  • Person 1: તમને કેમ લાગે મારી પુસ્તકો? (Tamanē kēm lāgē mārī pustako?) (How do you like my books?)
  • Person 2: તે અચ્છી છે. મને તમારી વસ્તુઓ પણ પસંદ છે. (Tē achchī chhe. Manē tamārī vastuo paṇ pasand chhe.) (It's good. I also like your things.)
