Abkhazian Vocabulary - Colors

Basic colors

Abkhazian has basic words for colors. Here are some of the most common ones:

сапәа	s̍apʷa	blue
аҳәӡәа	āhaz̍ʷa	green

Let's learn how to use these colors in sentences:

- Мышьа аҧшьа ап. (Myš̍a aṗš̍°a ap.) - The mouse is black.

- Жәбра гәбицәа ап. (ƶəbra ġəbic̣ʷa ap.) - The zebra is white and black.

- Апле масквае яӡыгәа ап. (Aplẹ maskʷae jaz̍əgʷa ap.) - The apple in Moscow is red.

- Куат сапәа ап. (Kuat s̍apʷa ap.) - The sky is blue.

- Цәера аҳәӡәа ап. (C̣ʷaēra āhaz̍ʷa ap.) - The trees are green.

- Голубь рыцәа иҭынҵытә. (Golub̌ rəc̣ʷa iṭənʒətʷa.) - The dove is yellow and white.

As you can see, we used the word "ап" [ap], which means "is" in Abkhazian. "Аҧшьа ап" [aṗš̍°a ap] is "is black" and "махәа аппарат яӡыгәа" [maxʷæʷa apparat jaz̍əgʷa] is "a red car".

Shades of colors

Abkhazian language allows you to create different shades of colors by adding prefixes or suffixes to the basic words.

Bright and dark

- Аҧшьаҟәа [aṗš̍°aqʷa] - dark black

- Аҧшьала [aṗš̍°ala] - bright black

- Гәбицәаҟәа [ġəbic̣ʷaqʷa] - dark white

- Гәбицәтәал [ġəbic̣ʷtʷal] - bright white

- Яӡыгәаләала [jaz̍əgʷaalʷala] - bright red

- Яӡыгәаләҟәа [jaz̍əgʷaalʷaqʷa] - dark red

- Сапәала [s̍apʷala] - bright blue

- Сапәҟәа [s̍apʷaqʷa] - dark blue

- Аҳәӡәала [āhaz̍ʷala] - bright green

- Аҳәӡәҟәа [āhaz̍ʷaqʷa] - dark green

- Рыцәаҟәа [rəc̣ʷaqʷa] - dark yellow

- Рыцәтәала [rəc̣ʷtʷala] - bright yellow

For example: - Гәбицәаҟәа ашәьрҟәа ара аҧәқәын. (Ġəbic̣ʷaqʷa aš̍ərqʷa ara aṗʷaqʷən.) - Dark white snow is falling.

- Аҳәӡәала шәҳәыгәа ап. (Āhaz̍ʷala š̍æhʷægʷa ap.) - The bright green grass is here.

- Мышьалала ап. (Myš̍alʷala ap.) - The mouse is bright black.

Light and pale

- Аҧшьатәтә [aṗš̍°atʷatʷ] - light black - Гәбицәтәтә [ġəbic̣ʷtʷatʷ] - light white - Яӡыгәаләҭә [jaz̍əgʷaalʷtə] - pale red - Сапәтәтә [s̍apʷtʷatʷ] - light blue - Аҳәӡәтәтә [āhaz̍ʷtʷatʷ] - light green - Рыцәтәтә [rəc̣ʷtʷatʷ] - pale yellow

For example:

- Аҧшьатәтә аҭыз ап. (Aṗš̍°atʷatʷ aṭəz ap.) - The black cat is light. - Сапәтәтә кәа ама арашәьртә апсара арылшә. (S̍apʷtʷatʷ kʷa ama araš̍ərtʷ apsara arylʷə.) - The pale blue flower floats on the river. - Яӡыгәаләҭә псалма ап. (Jaz̍əgʷaalʷtə psalma ap.) - The pale red butterfly is beautiful.

Here's an example dialogue to practice using the colors in Abkhazian:
