In this lesson, we will explore the Vietnamese culture and learn about "Banh chung day", a traditional rice cake made from glutinous rice, mung beans, pork, and other ingredients. This cake is an essential part of the Vietnamese New Year celebration, which falls on the first day of the lunar year. In 2017, Banh chung day coincided with the Vietnamese New Year on February 17th.

Legend has it that the origin of Banh chung day dates back to the Hong Bang Dynasty, when King Hung Vuong VI retired from his throne after defeating the Chinese invaders. To choose his successor, he held a competition among his sons, and Tiet Lieu emerged as the winner. A white-silvered hair man appeared in Tiet Lieu's dream and revealed the recipe for a special and unusual food, which turned out to be Banh chung. King Hung Vuong VI ordered that the recipe be shared with all the people in his kingdom, and it has since become a beloved tradition in Vietnamese culture.
