Southern Kurdish Vocabulary - Colors

Hi Southern Kurdish learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about colors in Southern Kurdish. Knowing colors is essential when describing things in a language. It is also helpful in day-to-day communication.

Colors

Below are the colors in Southern Kurdish together with their translations in English, and with corresponding pronunciation in IPA:

Southern Kurdish Pronunciation English
سپی [spɛj] White
قه‌ڕی [qæ.ɾiː] Black
سه‌رشت [sɐrʃt] Red
زەرد [zæɾd] Yellow
شین [ʃiːn] Blue
ئەمه‌رگی [æmæɾɡiː] Purple
سەوز [sæwz] Green
گوزەل [ɡozæl] Pink

You can use these colors to describe everyday things around you. For example, you can say:

  • مەبینی سوره‌کە سەپیە. (Mebînî sureka sepiya.) – “The wall is white.”
  • ئەو خاوەنێکە قه‌ڕیە. (Ew xawaneke qahriye.) – “That chair is black.”

Dialogue

To further help you use these words in context, let’s look at a small dialogue.

  • Person 1: ئەو گه‌لاکە نەمەردەبێت؟ (Ew gelake nemerdebêt?) – “What color is that shirt?”
  • Person 2: ئەو گه‌لاکە قه‌ڕییە. (Ew gelake qahriye.) – “That shirt is black.”

Conclusion

Now that you have learned some of the colors in Southern Kurdish, why not practice using them in your daily conversations? To improve your Southern Kurdish Vocabulary, you can also use the Polyglot Club website. Find native speakers and ask them any questions!
