Gujarati Grammar - Nouns

Hi Gujarati learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about Gujarati nouns.

What are Nouns?

In grammar, nouns are words used to refer to a person, animal, place, thing, or an abstract idea. In Gujarati, nouns are called સંજ્ઞાનામ (sanjnaama).

For example, in the sentence "મારો નામ જોહાન છે" (Māro nām johān chhe), નામ (nām) means "name", which is a noun.

Types of Nouns

In Gujarati, nouns are generally classified into two types: જાતિનામ (jaatinaama) - "common noun" and વિશેષણામ (visheShnaama) - "proper noun".

Common Nouns

Common nouns refer to any ordinary person, place, thing or idea.

Examples:

Gujarati Pronunciation English
કાકી Kākī Grandmother
સ્કૂલ Skūl School
ચાય Chāy Tea

Proper nouns, on the other hand, refer to specific persons, places or things.

Proper Nouns

Proper nouns always begin with a capital letter and refer to a specific name or title of a person, place or thing.

Examples:

Gujarati Pronunciation English
જોહાન Johān Johan
જુનાગઢ Junāgadha Junagadh
લિનક્સ Links Linux

Gender of Nouns

In Gujarati, just like in many other languages, nouns also have gender - masculine, feminine, or neuter.

Examples:

Gujarati Pronunciation English
પુરુષ PuruSh Masculine
સ્ત્રી Strī Feminine
નપુંસક Napunshak Neuter

Plural Forms of Nouns

In Gujarati, there is no specific plural form of most nouns. In fact, the plural is usually made by adding a word that means "more" or "many".

Examples:

Gujarati Pronunciation English
બાળકો Bālako Children (literally "more children")
પુસ્તકો Pustako Books (literally "many books")
વસ્તુઓ Vastuo Things (literally "many things")

Dialogue

  • Person 1: તમને કેમ લાગે મારી પુસ્તકો? (Tamanē kēm lāgē mārī pustako?) (How do you like my books?)
  • Person 2: તે અચ્છી છે. મને તમારી વસ્તુઓ પણ પસંદ છે. (Tē achchī chhe. Manē tamārī vastuo paṇ pasand chhe.) (It's good. I also like your things.)
