Hungarian Culture → Hungarian society and current affairs → Social issues and activism

As part of the “Complete 0 to A1 Hungarian Course,” this section focuses on Hungarian society and current affairs. Understanding contemporary social problems and initiatives in Hungary is essential to understanding the country and its residents. In this lesson, we will discuss some of the most significant social issues and activism in Hungary.

Poverty and Economic Inequality

One of Hungary's most significant problems is poverty and income inequality. According to recent studies, nearly 40% of Hungarians are at risk of poverty or social exclusion, putting Hungary among the EU's lowest performers in this regard. Poor living conditions and low income are also leading to widespread homelessness in the country.

Discrimination and Xenophobia

Hungary has been criticized for rising xenophobia, nationalist sentiment, and anti-immigrant attitudes. A significant proportion of Hungarians view immigrants and refugees as a threat to national security and demand harsher border controls. The country has also seen a rise in far-right political parties that promote and fuel these attitudes.

Environmental Issues

Climate change and environmental problems are issues that are beginning to get more attention in Hungary, and there are many grassroots organizations and initiatives working to raise awareness and promote environmental protection. Some of the most significant environmental issues facing Hungary are air and water pollution, waste management, and biodiversity loss.

Activism and Initiatives

Despite these problems, Hungary has a thriving civil society and a strong tradition of activism. NGOs, civil society organizations, and private individuals have organized a variety of initiatives that address social issues and promote change. Some of the most significant movements include:

  • One Billion Rising Hungary - a campaign to end violence against women and girls
  • Hungary for Climate - an environmental organization that aims to raise awareness of and address climate change
  • A Város Mindenkié – a group devoted to fighting homelessness and poverty
  • The Hungarian Maltese Charity Service - a Catholic charity that provides aid to the country's needy

Conclusion

Understanding contemporary Hungarian societal issues and activism is vital to understanding the country's culture and people. By engaging in activism and supporting initiatives dedicated to promoting social justice, Hungarians are working towards a better future for themselves and the global community.
