Asking for directions is an important skill to have when traveling in a foreign country. Here are some key phrases in Hungarian that will help you navigate your way around:

Useful Phrases to ask your directions in Hungarian[edit | edit source]

"Elnézést, merre van a(z)..." - "Excuse me, where is the..."[edit | edit source]

This is a polite way to ask for directions. Just fill in the blank with the name of the place you are looking for.

Example: "Elnézést, merre van a múzeum?" (Excuse me, where is the museum?)

"Hogyan jutok el a(z)..." - "How do I get to the..."[edit | edit source]

This is a useful phrase when you're not sure how to get to your destination. Again, just fill in the blank with the name of the place.

Example: "Hogyan jutok el a szállodához?" (How do I get to the hotel?)

"Ez merre van?" - "Which way is this?"[edit | edit source]

If you're already on the right street but you're not sure which way to go, this phrase will come in handy.

"Jobbra fordulok" - "I turn right."[edit | edit source]

Use this phrase to indicate which direction you are turning.

Example: "A következő kereszteződésnél jobbra fordulok." (At the next intersection, I turn right.)

"Balra fordulok" - "I turn left."[edit | edit source]

This is similar to the previous phrase, but indicates a left turn.

Example: "Menjen egyenesen, majd balra forduljon a piachoz." (Go straight, then turn left at the market.)

"Egyenesen megyek" - "I go straight."[edit | edit source]

If you don't need to turn, this phrase will let you indicate that you're continuing straight ahead.

Example: "Menjen egyenesen a park felé." (Go straight towards the park.)

"Az első sarkon jobbra" - "The first corner on the right."[edit | edit source]

This is a useful phrase when you need to turn onto a smaller street or alley.

Example: "Az első sarkon jobbra van egy kis bolt." (There's a small shop on the first corner on the right.)

With these phrases, you'll be able to navigate your way around Hungary with ease! Remember to always be polite and say "Köszönöm" (Thank you) after receiving directions. Good luck!
