As a Tamil language teacher with over 20 years of experience, I believe that understanding the culture and customs of a language can greatly enhance one's experience in speaking the language. In this lesson, we will explore the major festivals and celebrations of Tamil Nadu and their significance.
Pongal
Pongal is one of the most important festivals in Tamil Nadu, celebrated in the month of Thai (January-February) to mark the harvest season. The highlight of the festival is the preparation of sweet rice dishes made with newly-harvested rice. The festival lasts four days and each day has its own significance. On the first day, Bhogi, people get rid of old belongings and replace them with new ones. On the second day, Perum, people worship the Sun God and offer the prepared dishes. The third day, Mattu, is dedicated to cows as they play a vital role in agriculture. The fourth and final day, Kannum, is when people visit friends and family and exchange greetings.

Tamil New Year
The Tamil New Year, also known as Puthandu, falls on April 14th every year. On this day, people visit temples, draw colorful patterns called kolams in front of their homes and exchange greetings with each other. Additionally, it is customary to have a feast with family and friends. The Tamil calendar starts with the month of Chithirai, which symbolizes new beginnings and prosperity.

Karthigai Deepam
Karthigai Deepam is a festival of lights that is celebrated in the Tamil month of Karthigai (November-December). People light lamps (known as agal vilakku) in their homes and in temples to worship the Lord Shiva and seek his blessings. It is believed that lighting lamps can remove darkness, ignorance, and evil.

This festival celebrates the birth anniversary of the famous composer Saint Tyagaraja, who composed thousands of songs in praise of Lord Rama. This festival is marked by a week-long series of concerts by prominent classical musicians from across the country.
