In this lesson, we will learn how to count in Kannada from 1 to 10. Knowing how to count is very important in learning any language. It will help you in daily conversations like buying groceries, ordering food, asking for directions, and many more.

Kannada Numbers

In Kannada, numbers are written in Kannada script. Kannada script is derived from the ancient Brahmi script, which is also the ancestor of many Indian scripts. Kannada script is a syllabic script, meaning there is a separate symbol for each syllable. It is very important to learn Kannada script to read and write in Kannada. But don't worry, for now, we will learn only the spoken form of numbers in Kannada. Let's start with the first five numbers.

In Kannada, the numbers six to nine are named based on how many less than ten they are. For example, ಆರು (Aaru) means six, and it comes from the word ಹದಿನೆಂಟು (hadinendu) which means two less than ten. Similarly, seven is ಏಳು (Elu), which comes from ಹದಿನಾಲ್ಕು (hadinaalku) which means three less than ten, and so on.

• Person 1: ನೀವು ಎಷ್ಟು ಹಣ ಕೊಡುವಿರಿ? (Neevu eshtu hana koduvaru?) (How much money are you giving?)
• Person 2: ಐದು ರೂಪಾಯಿ (Aidu ruupaayi) (Five rupees)

• Person 1: ನೀವು ನನಗೆ ಏನು ಕೊಡಬೇಕು? (Neevu nanage enu kodabeku?) (What do you want to give me?)
• Person 2: ನನಗೆ ಎರಡು ಪೆನ್ನುಗಳು ಬೇಕು (Nanage eradu pennugalu beku) (I want two pens)

Kannada is one of the oldest surviving languages in the world, with a history spanning more than 2000 years. It is the official language of the state of Karnataka in India, where it is spoken by more than 60 million people. Kannada language has contributed significantly to Indian literature, with works that range from Jnanpith Award winners to popular novels.

Kannada is also known for its unique colloquial expressions and proverbs, which reflect the rich cultural heritage of the state.
