Bengali Grammar - Future Tense

Hi Bengali learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will be exploring the Bengali Future tense. Talking about the future is a fundamental part of language, and knowing how to express the future tense opens up a world of possibilities when it comes to communication. Get ready to take your Bengali skills to the next level!

Future Tense Basics

The Bengali future tense shows that an action or event is going to happen in the future. Here's an example:

রবি আচ্ছে কল করবে। (Robi acche kol korbe.) Robi will call tomorrow.

In this example, the verb "করবে" (korbe) means "will do". This tense is used when we want to talk about actions that have not yet happened, but will happen in the future.

Conjugation

Let's take a look at the conjugation of the future tense in Bengali. To form the future tense, we need to add the suffix "-বে" ("-be") to the verb. Here are a few examples:

Bengali Pronunciation English
খেলা হবে khe-la ho-be It will be played
আসবে ash-be He/She will come
শিখবে shikh-be He/She will learn
খাবে kha-be He/She will eat

Notice how we only need to add the suffix to the root of the verb to create the future tense. It's important to remember to use this suffix to create the future tense correctly.

Using the Future Tense in a Dialogue

Here's an example dialogue to illustrate how to use the future tense in Bengali:

  • Person 1: আগামী মাসে আমি পড়াশুনা শুরু করব। (Agami mase ami porashuna shuru korbo.)(I will start teaching next month.)
  • Person 2: সুন্দর। আমি আপনার ক্লাসে নিব। (Shundor. Ami apnar classe nib.)(Nice. I will take your class.)

Notice how the future tense in Bengali is quite easy to use once you understand the suffix "-বে".

Exceptions

While the future tense is generally straightforward in Bengali, there are a few exceptions worth mentioning. Some verbs will change their stem slightly, and others might have unique endings. Here are a few examples of irregular verbs in the future tense:

Bengali Pronunciation English
আসব ash-bo I/We will come
হব ho-bo I/We will be
থাকব thak-bo I/We will stay

Note how the "-বে" suffix is replaced by the irregular stem of the verb. This is important to keep in mind when conjugating irregular verbs in the future tense.

Culture and Fun Facts

Bengali is an official language of Bangladesh and is also spoken in the Indian states of West Bengal and Tripura. It is the seventh most-spoken language in the world, with over 250 million speakers.

In Bengali, there are two categories of future tense - "simple future" and "future progressive". The simple future tense is used for basic future intentions, while the future progressive tense is used for actions that will be ongoing in the future.
