For example, ಆರು (Aaru) means six, and it comes from the word ಹದಿನೆಂಟು (hadinendu) which means two less than ten. Similarly, seven is ಏಳು (Elu), which comes from ಹದಿನಾಲ್ಕು (hadinaalku) which means three less than ten, and so on.
