Hungarian Grammar - How to Use "Be"

In this lesson, we will learn how to use the verb "be" in Hungarian. We will look at the conjugation of the verb, as well as some examples of how it is used in sentences.

The verb "be" is an important verb in Hungarian. It is used to express existence, location, and identity. It is also used to form the passive voice. Let's take a look at the conjugation of the verb.

Person Singular Plural
First vagyok (vah-yok) vagyunk (vah-yunk)
Second vagy (vah-y) vagytok (vah-y-tok)
Third van (vahn) vannak (vahn-nak)

Now let's look at some examples of how the verb "be" is used in sentences.

  • Person 1: Hol vagy? (hol vah-y) (Where are you?)
  • Person 2: Én itt vagyok. (ayn eet vah-yok) (I am here.)
  • Person 1: Ki vagy? (kee vah-y) (Who are you?)
  • Person 2: Én egy tanár vagyok. (ayn ayg tah-nahr vah-yok) (I am a teacher.)
