Bengali Grammar - How to Use "Be"

In this lesson, we will learn how to use the verb "be" in Bengali. This is an intermediate level lesson, so if you are a beginner, you may want to review some of the basics of Bengali grammar first.

The verb "be" is used to express existence, identity, or location. In Bengali, it is conjugated differently depending on the subject. Let's take a look at the conjugations for the verb "be" in the present tense:

Bengali Pronunciation English Translation
আছি ɑːtʃi I am
তুমি tumi You are
তারা tɑrɑ They are
আমি ɑmi We are

Now let's look at an example dialogue using the verb "be":

  • Person 1: আমি কোথায় আছি? (ɑmi kothɑi ɑtʃi?; Where am I?)
  • Person 2: তুমি এখানে আছো (tumi ekhɑne ɑtʃo; You are here).

In addition to expressing existence, identity, and location, the verb "be" can also be used to express possession. To do this, the verb "have" is used in conjunction with the verb "be". For example:

  • Person 1: তুমি কি আছো? (tumi ki ɑtʃo?; What do you have?)
  • Person 2: আমি একটি বই আছি (ɑmi ekti boi ɑtʃi; I have a book).

Finally, the verb "be" can also be used to express feelings or emotions. For example:

  • Person 1: তুমি কি ভালো আছো? (tumi ki bhɑlo ɑtʃo?; Are you feeling good?)
