Amharic Grammar - How to Use "Be"

In this lesson, we will learn how to use the verb "be" in Amharic. This is an intermediate level lesson, so if you are a beginner, you may want to review some of the basics first.

The verb "be" is used to describe a state or condition. It is used to talk about things like location, possession, and identity. In Amharic, the verb "be" is conjugated differently depending on the subject.

The verb "be" is conjugated as follows:

I እኔ ነኝ ene nen I am
You (singular) እርሱ ነህ ersu neh You are
He/She/It እርስ ነህ ersu neh He/She/It is

Let's look at some examples of how to use the verb "be" in Amharic.

  • Person 1: እኔ አማርኛ ነኝ (I am Amharic)
  • Person 2: እርሱ አማርኛ ነህ (You are Amharic)
  • Person 1: እኔ አማርኛ ተመልከት ነኝ (I speak Amharic)
  • Person 2: እርሱ አማርኛ ተመልከት ነህ (You speak Amharic)
