Greek adjectives are formed using
the same three declensions and the same persistent accent rules that are used by Greek nouns.Furthermore, just as each noun belongs to a particular declension, each adjective belongs to a specific declension family or grouping. The second class traditionally includes adjectives pertaining only to the third declension, for the three genders. The third class includes those which fall under the third declension, for the masculine and the neuter, and of the first, for the feminine. The presentation adopted combines these two classes. Some adjectives, especially compounds, are said to be "with 2 endings", having forms similar to masculine and feminine eg. : ὁ, ἡ ἄδικος, τὸ ἄδικον: injust, ὁ ἅπας, τὸ ἅπαν : tout un chacun, chacun / all together ὁ, ἡ σώφρων : sain d’esprit ou de cœur / of sound mind ὁ, ἡ βάρβαρος : barbare / barbarous * * In order to make clear the declension family to which a given adjective belongs, each is listed with all of its nominative singular. For ex.: Nominative singular forms in –ος, –η (-ᾱ), –ον Three-Ending 1st and 2nd Declension Adjective Nominative singular forms in –ος, –ον Two-Ending 2nd Declension Adjective Nominative singular forms in –ς, — Two-Ending 3rd Declension Adjective Nominative singular forms in –ς, –α, — Three-Ending 1st and 3rd Declension Adjectives In this lesson, we review the most common type of adjective: Three-Ending 1st and 2nd Declension |
Les adjectifs suivent les mêmes modèles
de déclinaisons que les noms. 1) D'après ces modèles de déclinaisons, les adjectifs sont repartis en 3 classes. ἡ δικαία : juste / just, - ἡ καλή :bonne /beautiful, noble, ἡ βαθεῖα : profond / deep , ἡ πᾶσα : toute / entire, all, every 2) La deuxième classe comprend traditionnellement les adjectifs relevant uniquement de la troisième déclinaison, pour les trois genres.La troisième classe comprend ceux qui relèvent de la troisième déclinaison, pour le masculin et le neutre, et de la première, pour le féminin. Par ex. : en : -ος, -η, -ον και -ος, -α, -ον comme : ἀγαθός, ἀγαθή, ἀγαθὸν (bon / good, brave, noble) / γενναῖος, γενναία, γενναῖον (de noble race, généreux, courageux / brave man, high-born ) dont les féminins se forment selon la α΄classe. La présentation adoptée regroupe ces deux classes. Certains adjectifs, surtout des composés, sont dits « à 2 désinences », ayant des formes semblables au masculin et au féminin par ex. : ὁ, ἡ ἄδικος, τὸ ἄδικον : injust-e , ὁ ἅπας, τὸ ἅπαν : tout un chacun, chacun / all together ὁ, ἡ σώφρων : sain d’esprit ou de cœur / of sound mind ὁ, ἡ βάρβαρος : barbare / barbarous * * 3) Quelques adjectifs de formes contractées tels que : χρυσοῦς, χρυσῆ, χρυσοῦν (d’or / golden ) 4) Déclinaison attique : quelques adjectifs suivent la déclinaison attique, présentant partout un ω au lieu de ο et un ῳ au lieu de οι : ὁ, ἡ ἵλεως, τὸ ἵλεων ( favorable, propice, miséricordieux / propitious, merciful ). |
* Η γραμματική λέει ότι είναι δικατάληκτα:
τα περισσότερα από τα σύνθετα, π.χ. ὁ, ἡ ἄ-γονος, τὸ ἄ-γονον : qui n’engendre pas, stérile / unborn, unfruitful, sterile ὁ, ἡ ἀξιό-μαχος, τὸ ἀξιό-μαχον : digne ou capable de combattre / worthy or capable to battle |
** Barbarian : The Greeks used the term barbarian for all "non-Greek" speaking peoples, emphasizing their otherness,
to designate peoples who do not belong to their civilization. According to Greek writers, this was because the language they spoke sounded to Greeks like gibberish represented by the sounds "bar..bar..bar ..." which is an echo mimetic or onomatopoeic word. |
** Barbares : le terme était utilisé par les anciens Grecs pour désigner les peuples n’appartenant pas à leur civilisation
- définie par la langue et la religion helléniques - et dont ils ne parvenaient pas à comprendre leurs langue. Barbare signifiait alors « non grec » : toute personne dont le langage ressemblait, pour les Grecs, en l'écoutant, à un charabia « bar..bar..bar ... » |
